Parents divorced just 10 days after Highsmith was born, and she resented her stepdad.
Her mother sent Highsmith to live with her grandmother at the age of twelve, to which h Highsmith said, ”Was the saddest year of my life.”
Grew up to be an introverted alcoholic and preferred to spend time with her pets.
Never had an intimate relationship that lasted longer than a couple of years.
Died alone with no children at the age of 74.
Always felt her mother abandoned her emotionally and had a rough relationship with her.
First Novel was Strangers on a Train, published in 1950. The violence in the novel became her trademark. This novel later was adapted into a film produced by Alfred Hitchcock, further increasing Highsmith’s popularity.
Also published the novel The Price of Salt under a pseudonym due to the lesbian characters in the story. Even though the topic of homosexuality was taboo during this time period the novel sold over a million copies.
